Study on the Competitiveness and Influencing Factors of Rice Export in APEC member countries

  • To enhance the competitiveness of rice from APEC member countries and promote the healthy development of the rice industry, it is necessary to analyze the export competitiveness of rice. By utilizing the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index and Market Share (MS), the international competitiveness of rice from APEC member countries is assessed. Additionally, panel data from 2013 to 2022 and the Tobit model are used to explore the impact of factors such as climate conditions, logistics efficiency, and price levels on the export competitiveness of rice in the APEC market. The results indicate that Vietnam and Thailand have significant competitive advantages in the APEC rice export market, with Vietnam's RCA index increasing from 10.252 to 13.735 and Thailand's RCA index fluctuatation in 11.419~16.628. Efficient logistics systems would help boost competitiveness, while open trade policies and harsh climate conditions inhibit competitiveness.Economic freedom, price levels, and foreign direct investment also play key roles in competitiveness. Finally, from the main factors affecting rice competitiveness, policy recommendations are proposed to enhance the competitiveness of the rice industry and strengthen its position in the international market.
