From Forest to Fork: Resource Potential, Industrial Bottlenecks, and Sustainable Development Strategies for Forest Foods

Abstract: In the context of global challenges in sustainable development and food security, forest foods, which are natural products derived from forest ecosystems, have emerged as a strategic resource for practicing a “big food concept” and ensuring a diversified food supply. China boasts abundant and diverse forest food resources with multiple nutritional, economic, and social values, achieving an annual output exceeding 200 million tons and possessing a solid industrial foundation. However, its industrialization process still faces multifaceted bottlenecks, including unclear resource baselines, lagging production technologies, low processing levels, imperfect market systems, and insufficient policy support, all of which hinder the realization of value from “forest to table”. To address this, we propose implementing systematic sustainable development strategies: strengthening precise resource management and ecological production, promoting technological innovation and full-chain standardization, building a modern market system and resilient industrial chain, and improving coordinated policies and legal safeguards. Through collaborative multi-dimensional strategies, the industry can be driven towards innovation and ecological friendliness, thereby fully unleashing the potential of forest foods in ensuring food security, promoting rural revitalization, and advancing ecological civilization.
